Gutter Boy is the story of a caste divide, societal segregation and the life-changing experience of a young man. Sandeep belongs to a poor, lower caste family and hails from a small, backward town in India, where they struggle to make ends meet. Like every other youngster, he dreams of being part of the world that creates the muck—and not among those who have to clean it. He comes to the big city, hoping to uplift himself and his family from that grimy life. His friend’s brother helps him, but Sandeep soon realizes how tough life is there. Indeed, even in big cities, there are corners for people like him, not to build a life, but merely to survive.

Director: Anupam Khanna Baswal: is from New Delhi. After completing a Master in Mathematics and a Bachelor in Education, she wanted to become a filmmaker, but commercial potboilers were not how she imagined telling her stories. So, she worked 20 years to build a financial stability that would allow her to invest in her own film projects, returning to India in 2018–2019 to complete filmmaking degrees at IFI (New Delhi) and FTII (Pune). Her first film, Gutter Boy, is a self-funded project depicting the harsh lives of sewer cleaners and the ugly caste divide in India. “Gutter Boy speaks about how, as a society, we don’t consider the man cleaning our gutters human enough to even offer him water. The film raises important questions about the deaths that happen due to the toxic gases that develop in sewages and how these poor people risk their lives every day, just to earn a handful of coins to feed their families.”
